Subject: The need for stricter and safer security at the entrance of our campus

The objective of this memo is to persuade our office into spending more money on the entrances of our campus. This will prevent many possible tragedies and ultimately leave us all safer on campus.

Summary

The Convent Avenue entrance is extremely popular. This is a main entrance that simply does not have the necessary safety features to prevent a person from bringing in a firearm to possibly cause harm to our campus life. I would urge you to speak to me about this immediately as an attack can happen at any moment and we should be prepared now.

Discussion

While I was attending my first class ever on campus back in the summer of 2019, one of the first things I noticed is how easily someone can bring in a weapon of some sort, and this really scared me everyday that I was there. I did not feel as safe as I should have when I was outside of buildings, this lead to fear of the outside even while I was in a building. While experiencing this, I quickly thought of many ways of how, as a community and as a team, we can make students, teachers, faculty, and everyone feel a little more safe.

The first step we can take is implementing metal detectors at every entrance of the campus, and have the current security by them to check too. Although it may take a little more time for students to get to their classes, this will be greatly worth it as it makes it all the more difficult for someone to bring a weapon like a rifle or even a deadly blade. There is no reason that these types of weapons should be on campus and this is the first step to a safer environment. This will most definitely make it extremely difficult for an attacker to bring a weapon on campus.

Another idea I had was to require students to provide ID at all entrances to the security guards who are also checking metal detectors. One method of doing this would be providing your CUNY ID card that has your information, and the security would have to check if it’s valid. This would require a lot of effort, but it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Recommendation

I truly appreciate you taking your time to read my ideas for improved campus safety and would like to discuss this further. Together, we can make our students feel all the more safe on their campus. Please email me at [email protected] to arrange a meeting.
